In our last post, we talked about Phone Medics Plus’s recycling program for used cell phones and other personal electronics. We also mentioned that as part of that program, all proceeds from our sale of recyclable material will be donated to the Brevard Humane Society. We that in mind, we wanted to shine a spotlight on the Brevard Humane Society, and tell you a little bit more about who they are and what they do.
The Brevard Humane Society is the oldest animal welfare organization in Brevard County. It was founded in 1952 to promote humane treatment of animals and to care for the homeless animals of Brevard County. A “no kill for space” shelter, Brevard Humane Society does not euthanize animals just to free up cage space. Instead, they seek to create a “no kill community” by offering programs that promote care for animals, the adoption of homeless animals, and raising community awareness on the importance of spaying and neutering pets.
To help achieve that goal, the Brevard Humane Society offers a low cost spay/neuter and animal wellness clinic. Health care for animals can be sometimes be very expensive, and while many of us have health insurance to help cover our own medical expenses, similar services for animals are not common, and can be prohibitively expensive themselves. With that in mind, the Brevard Humane Society created their clinic as a place for the pet owners of Brevard County to get affordable health care services for their pets, including spaying/neutering, vaccinations, wellness checks, microchipping, heartworm prevention, and more.
In addition to providing affordable health care services, the Brevard Humane Society is also there for you following the loss of a pet. They understand that for many of us, our pets are members of the family, and the death of a pet can be deeply upsetting. At their Heavenly Paws Chapel, the Brevard Humane Society offers a number of services to help you through the end of your pet’s life.
The Brevard Humane Society also operates four conveniently-located Molly Mutt Thrift Shops. These shops offer a wide range of donated merchandise, including clothing, jewelry, household items, and even furniture at affordable prices. All proceeds from the your purchase at these thrift shops go directly back to the Brevard Humane Society.
When you adopt an animal from the Brevard Humane Society, you receive a pet who has been spayed or neutered and dewormed. All adult dogs are tested for heartworm, and all cats have been tested for feline leukemia and feline AIDS. You can see many of the pets available for adoption at the Brevard Humane Society on their website, where you can also fill out an adoption application. You can also visit their Facebook page, where they provide information on upcoming events, showcase pets who have recently found there “furever homes,” and more.
The main office of the Brevard Humane Society is at 1020 Cox Rd. in Cocoa. In addition to being their intake facility and primary adoption center, it’s also where they provide their low cost spay/neuter and wellness clinic, and the location of their Heavenly Paws Chapel and cremation service. Additionally, you can visit their second adoption center at 155 Pioneer Rd. in Merritt Island, and their four Molly Mutt Thrift Shops on Courtenay Parkway in Merritt Island, East New Haven Avenue in Melbourne, US 1 in Rockledge, and Palm Bay Road in Palm Bay.
To drop off your personal electronics for recycling, and for all your mobile device and PC repair needs, you can visit Phone Medics Plus at 91 E. Merritt Island Causeway in Merritt Island.
